Meet Todd Conklin, the witty and wise safety expert who spent a whopping 30 years at the renowned Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Senior Advisor for Organizational and Safety Culture. That's right, he's got a PhD and three decades of experience under his belt - so you know he's got some serious brainpower.
For the last 25 years of his career, Dr. Conklin has been tackling the Human Performance program at Los Alamos, straddling the academic and practical worlds with ease. He's been everywhere, man - speaking to executives, groups, and work teams all over the globe about the vital connection between workers in the field and an organization's systems, processes, and programs.
But it's not just talk for Conklin. Oh no - he's put these ideas into practice at major corporations worldwide and even lends his expertise to event investigations across the planet. Plus, he's a best-selling author with his book, Pre-Accident Investigations: An Introduction to Organizational Safety, and has a massive following for his twice-weekly podcast of the same name.
So, what's Conklin's secret to success? Safety, of course! To him, safety means enabling workers to tackle any challenge in a world that's full of surprises.
And as if that wasn't enough, he resides in the stunning Santa Fe, New Mexico and believes that Human Performance is the most fulfilling work he's ever had the pleasure of teaching and living.
In conclusion, if you want a true expert in the field of safety, you can't go wrong with Todd Conklin - just don't try to beat him at Jeopardy.
“Safety is the ability for workers to be able to do work in a varying and unpredictable world.” - Todd Conklin
Preventing Human Errors: What’s Stopping Us?
When accidents occur, they are attributed to human failure, the belief that the processes or systems are fundamentally safe except for the people using them. Therefore, if the human element is eliminated, there won’t be any accidents. This kind of thinking gets you nowhere. It’s time for us to rethink safety. The place to start is by examining the cause of a mishap and recognizing the role our physiology plays in our actions. If we can get a better understanding of that phenomenon, we can move toward interventions that work to reduce workplace accidents. Dr. Conklin provides you with an entertaining and practical look at what is behind human performance and why we need to change our perception of human error before we can change safety.
Workplace Humor and Friendship
This presentation provides an interesting look at some of the “upstream’ skills that must exist in your workplace. A behaviorist views humor and friendship differently than most people who observe work, he looks not at the reasons why these things exist, but more importantly at the existence of humor and friendships.
Appreciative Inquiry (AI)
This process is perhaps the best method to use with groups of people to make decisions. The more difficult the problem or technical the potential solution is…the more effective the Appreciative Inquiry model is at getting groups of people to make decisions based upon the past success of the individual members. AI builds lightning fast consensus from groups that often are unable to have agreement around difficult issues. Conklin has used the AI model hundreds of times with many different types of groups and different types of problems.

The presentation is three hours minimum and is considered very positive and thought provoking.
