Blueprint to a Billion: The Ten Multipliers of High Growth Companies

For the past decade, Robert Hargrove has studied the top performing companies on the NYSE. The number one performer? Priceline.com with a whopping 4962% increase for shareholders. The # 2? Apple with a 4026% return.

Robert shares The Ten Multipliers—principles or patterns these top performing companies had in common—that you can begin to apply to your business immediately.

  1. Unleash the entrepreneurial within
  2. Develop a strategy of pre-eminence
  3. Target a high growth market
  4. Come up with a Game Changing product or service
  5. Carve out a breakthrough value proposition
  6. Collaborate with customers to find out what they will buy
  7. Develop best-in-class business processes
  8. Break into new markets with a big brother partnership
  9. Make your marketing revolutionary and subversive
  10. Be a multiplier vs. a diminisher with people

Leaders Must Be Game Changers

Most leaders in Fortune 500 companies are paid to predict the future: Tell Wall Street that we are going to do what we did last year plus 4% to 5%. By contrast, leaders of high growth companies—Apple, Google, Tata—are paid to create the future and tend to be absolutely uncomfortable with the status quo.

Leaders not only need to have an Impossible Future, but to be game changers who come up with disruptive business models, products, and services. That’s what led to the success of Apple, Starbucks, Netflix, Southwest Airline, Walmart, and many others.

The issue for many companies is that, while they need leaders who are game changers to grow the business, these leaders are often perceived as “counter cultural.”
Robert will energize leaders and show how to resolve this dilemma through a dual strategy that involves running your existing business, while at the same time, creating a parallel universe.

An Impossible Future

Robert engages his audience with his talk on the importance of having an Impossible Future, or greater goal. An Impossible Future could be becoming CEO of your company, shipping your next billion in revenue, or doing the best for your employees, customers, or world at large.

An Impossible Future provides a whole new strategic framework for a company, usually matched with a game changing product or service. An Impossible Future also gives people a reason to get up in the morning and work with commitment, passion, and zeal.

Robert will illustrate the above with fascinating stories drawn from his coaching experience. For example, Rattan Tata was driving through the streets of Calcutta when he saw a family on a motor scooter get into a terrible accident. He drove to a newspaper interview and said he was going to build a car for $2500. He had not even talked to his engineers before making that declaration. Suddenly people who could never in a million years afford to drive a car could own one. Tata got millions of orders in the first month, and it became not only a boon to society, but also a real money maker for the company.

7 Tips for Building a High Performance Organization

Every business has unrecognized opportunities, underutilized assets, under-performing processes, under engaged employees. In this talk, Robert Hargrove will show that one powerful way to turn this situation around is to build a high performance organization.

Robert will provide his seven tips for building a high-performance organization that you can start implementing today.

  1. Demonstrate Authentic, Passionate Leadership. Stand for something. The CEO of Tata took a stand for a $2500 car
  2. Start with the Why. People need a reason to walk through fire. Most organizations just focus on the what, and the how, but neglect to tell people the why.
  3. Develop a Strategy of Pre-eminence. Think in terms of dominating your niche by out innovating, out marketing, out selling the competition.
  4. Set Impossible Goals, Hold People Accountable for Results. It’s better to go for an impossible goal and miss it by a few inches, than a predictable one and hit it.
  5. Give Your Organization a Focus. Revenue growth, disruptive innovation, world class processes…most companies don’t have a focus (or they have too many).
  6. Commit to Exceptional People in Every Key Job. “Get me the best in the world,” Arthur Blank, founder of Home Depot, instructed his HR manager.
  7. Foster Creative Collaboration. Breakthroughs happen when you bring far flung collaborators together to light creative sparks.

Robert will talk about the fact that leaders in most companies tend to think their job is to “lead from the front,” making all the decisions and telling people what to do. We need to change the game to “lead from behind,” to inspiring and empowering people to bring out the best that they have to offer.
