Jazz Impact Speaker Biography

Who would have thought that two seemingly disparate worlds—the world of Jazz and the business world—would have so much in common? The elements that create a successful jazz quartet are the same components critical for sustaining a highly effective business team.

Good jazz and high performance business depend on creativity, agility, empathy and flexibility. The similarities don’t end there. The business lessons of jazz focus on high performance teamwork, multitasking, cross-functional awareness, innovation and responsiveness to change. Jazz translates seamlessly across cultures and serves as a social model that can be leveraged to teach business the skills of collaboration.

  • Experiencing the business impact of jazz will deepen your human capital’s understanding of the integration of diverse skills and roles.
  • The Jazz Impact Experience will stimulate your company to create and imagine new possibilities, through a live, interactive experience.

Jazz Impact is a fusion of insights and parallels drawn from the world of business illustrated through the experience of jazz. Through live music and interactive engagement, Jazz Impact delivers perspectives and techniques that will have an IMMEDIATE effect on your people and your business.

Jazz Impact extends the concept of the traditional keynote speaker at corporate seminars or events from entertainment to breakthrough learning. The combination of provocative ideas and compelling live performance of a world-class jazz ensemble creates a multifaceted experience your team is sure to remember.

Each program is customized to address the purpose of each particular event. A typical 60-90 minute Jazz Impact Seminar engages the audience in an exciting fusion of speaking, high impact ensemble performance and interactive engagement through short improvisational exercises.

Through hands-on interaction and the compelling performance of a World Class Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Impact demonstrates:

  • What skills are needed for improvisationHow jazz musicians mitigate risk
  • Why improvisation is criticalHow these principles relate to the interactive dynamics of your business.

NEGOTIATING CHANGE

The members of a jazz ensemble possess and practice a set of shared behaviors that we call the Five Dynamics of Jazz. These five dynamics, whose acronym is APRIL are:

  • AUTONOMY -Self-governing, self-regulating, adaptable and independent—yet in support of—and interdependent with, the structure and purpose of the team.
  • PASSION - The single most important resource for any company lives in the diverse nature of the heart of each of its employees—the quality of emotional vibrancy, zest, commitment, and energy to pursue excellence and the course one believes to be true.
  • RISK - Taking risk in jazz means minimizing the confining elements of process while maximizing the output of constructive new ideas and perspectives. It means the ability to take chances and explore new territory and methods in pursuit of shared goals, and the ability to support others in their explorations.
  • INNOVATION - A conscious, purposeful search for new opportunities—the ability to engage unexpected change, incongruities and problems as opportunities for new discovery. Innovation means the skill to create the new by reinventing the old in ever-changing new contexts.
  • LISTENING - In a world of increasing complexity and diversity survival depends on the ability to listen beyond the comfort zone of what we already understand. To truly hear and feel the communication of new ideas, of passion, meaning and the rhythms of others.
