As Chairman of Emergency Services for his health system (1998-2001), he led his system’s emergency departments to the 98th percentile in patient satisfaction and his own emergency department was in the > 90th percentile for 6 years in a row (1996-2001). Do You Want to be Fully Staffed?  What Physicians Can do for Nurse Recruitment and Retention

The single biggest issue facing health care today is adequate nurse and ancillary staffing. Short staffing leads to decreased clinical outcomes for patients, increased burnout for physicians and unsustainable cost for organizations.  Physicians tend to think that nurse recruitment and retention are the responsibility of nursing and hospital leadership. Yet, physicians have a profound influence on nurse satisfaction and whether nurses choose to work in and stay in an organization. This talk will focus on simple tactics that physicians can implement to give nurses and other staff what they most want and will include the identification of specific tools that can be used to increase nurse retention and decrease short staffing.

Objectives:

  1. Describe how physicians have a profound influence on nurse recruitment and retention.
  2. Define specific tactics that physicians can implement that will lead to fewer sick calls, lower turnover and increased morale of staff.
  3. Identify specific tools that hospitals and physicians can use to improve nurse morale, recruitment and retention.

Regaining Joy in Health Care – It is Not Just About Doing More Meditation

While the COVID pandemic may be “over,” the epidemic of burnout and moral injury among physicians and other clinicians is ever-present.  Since recruitment and retention of staff are a crucial initiative of health care organizations, it is critical to understand what factors are still contributing to that burnout, and what approaches are best utilized to help health care professionals regain joy in  their work.  This talk will focus on understanding a conceptual model of clinician well-being and that innovating the work environment will be more successful than just asking staff to be more resilient.

Objectives:

  1. Recognize the root causes of personal burnout & describe the impact of burnout on clinical quality, the patient experience, and the bottom line.
  2. Identify conceptual models of clinician well-being, including the Stanford Well-MD and the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being models.
  3. Share specific tactics to reduce burnout and improve workplace fulfillment.
