To celebrate Black History Month and the theme of Health and Wellness within the Black community, we wanted to spotlight one of our speakers who leads not only the speaking space but also the world of medicine — Dr. Ted James. His 20-year career as a physician leader, educator, and healthcare management consultant has led to his inspirational work as a keynote speaker guiding the healthcare industry to value-based care and leadership that transforms.
As a medical director and lecturer within the Harvard healthcare system, Dr. James has extensive experience with efforts to advance health care. He leads international programs focused on digital health, clinician engagement, and patient experience.
His work in bettering the healthcare system has created more equal care across demographics. With a focus on patient experience and providing transformative care, he is shifting the medical consciousness away from a business mentality and towards helping those in need.
He is an author whose work focuses on trends shaping the future of medicine and strategies for transforming the healthcare ecosystem. The book he co-authored, The OAS CAHPS Compendium (A Guidebook for Improving Patient Experience and Outcomes Across the Ambulatory Surgery), uses hard data with the aim of improving national healthcare in the surgical field. Dr. James has received numerous awards for his contributions to teaching, leadership, and quality.
One of his greatest professional satisfactions comes from partnering with others through his speaking career to reimagine healthcare in ways that improve organizational performance and the wellbeing of patients, care teams, and communities. He brings these ideas to organizations all over the world:
- Building a better healthcare system through revitalizing health care teams with action-based leadership, especially in these uncertain and trying times for frontline workers.
- Enhancing patient experience by focusing on value-based care, redesigning innovative approaches to eliminate waste, and developing methods for accountability.
- Creating transformative leadership through identifying the key characteristics and actions of great leaders and supporting those in growing into these roles.
- Transforming patient care through the study of data linking patient experience to clinical outcome, sharing best practices, and developing better decorum between patient and physician.
