The Future of Health & Wellness: Why Muscle Is the Key

When we talk about the future of health and wellness, most people immediately think of longevity as living longer and healthier lives. But according to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, renowned functional medicine expert and founder of the Institute for Muscle-Centric Medicine®, we’re missing a critical piece of the equation: muscle health.

Dr. Lyon challenges conventional thinking by shifting the focus from lifespan and health span to what she calls muscle span—how long we can maintain strong, functional, and metabolically healthy skeletal muscle throughout our lives.

More Muscle, Less Disease

Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Lyon argues that we don’t actually have an obesity problem—we have a muscle problem. The rising rates of chronic illness, insulin resistance, and frailty aren’t just about excess fat; they’re about too little muscle. In fact, she believes that in the near future, sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) will become a bigger public health crisis than obesity.

Why? Because muscle isn’t just about strength or appearance—it’s a powerful endocrine organ that regulates metabolism, supports immune function, and protects against disease. In this view, muscle is the foundation of lasting wellness.

If we truly want to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA), we have to start with muscle.

The Prescription for the Future

To combat the coming wave of muscle loss and chronic illness, Dr. Lyon outlines three non-negotiables:

  1. Strength Training – Resistance training is the #1 way to build and preserve muscle, especially as we age.
  2. Prioritizing Protein – Most people don’t get enough high-quality protein to support muscle maintenance. Dr. Lyon recommends 1g of protein per pound of ideal body weight as a general guideline.
  3. Early Intervention – Don’t wait until you’re older. Muscle loss starts earlier than we think, and prevention is far easier than reversal.

Muscle Span = Vitality

In Dr. Lyon’s view, a longer, stronger muscle span means a more independent, vibrant, and disease-resistant life. It’s not just about living longer—it’s about living stronger.

If we want to change the trajectory of our nation’s health, we must shift our collective mindset. The path forward isn’t found in more prescriptions or quick fixes. It’s built one rep, one protein-packed meal, and one proactive choice at a time.

MAHA starts with muscle.
Muscle is medicine.
And the future of wellness depends on it.
