John Iannarelli Speaker Biography


John Iannarelli was an FBI Special Agent for more than 20 years, during which time he served as the FBI’s National Spokesperson, was a member of the FBI Cyber Division Executive staff, was on the FBI SWAT team, and was an Assistant Special Agent in Charge overseeing all Criminal, Cyber, and Counter Intelligence Investigations.

John participated in many extensive investigations, including:

- The Oklahoma City Bombing
- The 9/11 attack
- Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shooting
- The Sony hack

During his FBI tenure, John received the FBI Director’s Distinguished Service Award, for which he was selected from the ranks of the Bureau’s 35,000 employees. John is also the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Computer Science in recognition of his contributions to the field of cyber investigations.

A former San Diego Police Officer and a graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law, including international studies at Oxford, England, John is an attorney admitted to the practice of law in California, Maryland, and Washington, DC. John was also an NFL Security Representative responsible for ensuring public safety throughout the football season and the Super Bowl.

John is the author of several books about his time in the FBI, cybersecurity, terrorism prevention, leadership & business, and more:

Cybersecurity
Throughout his FBI career, John investigated cybercrime, including hackers, ransomware attacks, cyber fraud, and online predators, for which he worked closely with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. John leveraged his cyber knowledge to educate others, such as new agents undergoing training at the FBI Academy, senior law enforcement officers from throughout the U.S. attending the FBI National Academy, and foreign police personnel receiving training through the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary. Active Shooter Preparedness & Response
John received formal Active Shooter response training while serving as a police officer and as a SWAT team member from the FBI. During his law enforcement career, he responded to two separate school shootings. He was on the scene to investigate the shooting of Congresswoman Gabriel Giffords, during which six persons were killed and another 13 wounded. Additionally, John arrived in Las Vegas on business an hour before the shooting occurred at Mandalay Bay, the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, and was immediately called upon by the national news media to provide live on-air television reporting for the Fox News Channel, CNN, and NBC.

As a keynote speaker, John has provided active shooter prevention and response training to the public and private sectors throughout the country. He has presented at hundreds of conferences and businesses. Through his presentation, John shares the apparent warning signs before many active shooter situations occur and how advanced intervention may prevent a tragedy. Leadership & Ethics Lessons from the FBI
John held numerous positions of leadership within the FBI. He was the Bureau’s national spokesperson addressing the national and international media on all the matters involving the FBI. He further served as the chief of staff to the Assistant Director, a squad supervisor overseeing agent investigations, was the on-scene supervisor during the execution of searches and arrests, was the on-scene commander during deployments of an FBI SWAT team, and served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of an FBI field office.

John is the author of Disorderly Conduct, in which he details many leadership experiences during his career in the FBI. John is a keynote speaker on leadership, recalling first-hand experiences which frequently involved critical incidents. Bank Robbery Prevention & Procedures

As an FBI Special Agent, John has investigated hundreds of bank robberies. He served as the FBI’s bank robbery coordinator, responsible for coordinating robbery investigations conducted jointly with local law enforcement agencies. He is the author of Disorderly Conduct, in which he details the stories of numerous bank robberies and arrests.

Today, John speaks at bank conferences and to bank employees on the various methods of robbery employed by criminals, focusing on the prevention and recognition of crime indicators before a robbery occurs. Likewise, he presents on what to do both during and after a robbery to ensure the safety of bank personnel and customers, as well as preserving necessary evidence to aid in law enforcement’s efforts to capture the criminal.
