News Detail - Jon Gordon

We could all benefit from accentuating the positive

Jon Gordon, Motivational Speaker

It is a challenge worth its weight in gold. You can do it. And if you do it, you will be better for it.

Join me and others for a Seven-Day No Complaining Challenge. Go a week without complaining and see how it changes your life.

Instead of complaining about what you don’t have, appreciate what you do have. Instead of complaining about other people, think of something good about them. Instead of complaining about problems, look for answers. Focus on the positive and overcome the negative.

Complaining sabotages your own happiness and success.

Breaking the habit of complaining can make a huge difference in your attitude, your view of your life and the world around you.

Let’s face it — If you are complaining, you’re not happy. Don’t you want to be happy?

To help you break out of a complaining rut, here are five things you can do instead of complaining.

These tips from Jon Gordon, author and motivational speaker, teaches you to choose your beliefs and actions, and focus on the positive instead of the negative.

You’ll find the faith, strength, and confidence you will need if you follow these tips.

» Practice gratitude: Count three blessings a day to boost your happiness. It’s impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. Two thoughts cannot occupy your mind at the same time. If you are focusing on gratitude, you can’t be negative.

» Praise others: Instead of complaining about what others are doing wrong, start focusing on what they are doing right. Praise them and watch the results. You might even get a smile from them.

» Focus on the positive: Each night before you go to bed, think of at least one positive thing that happened in your day. Focus on what was good.

» Let go: Think about the things that you have the power to change. Let go of the things that are beyond your control.

» Pray: Prayer reduces stress and encourages positive thoughts. When you are faced with the urge to complain or you are feeling stressed to the max, stop, be still and pray.

Funk & Wagnall’s definition of complaining is “to express dissatisfaction, pain, uneasiness, censure, resentment, or grief and find fault.”

Is this what you want in your life?

According to Carrie Wisehart, writer and speaker, complaining causes the following:

» It steals our joy.

» It encourages others to join in.

» It creates a negative environment.

» It solves nothing.

Let’s stop complaining. Just like that. Complaining points a finger at everyone else to fix the problem and it places no responsibility on us.

Maya Angelou, one of the wisest women in the world, offers some sage advice, “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”

Now it is your turn. Do whatever you need to do to take the Seven-Day No Complaining Challenge. Mark your calendar to start tomorrow. Make a big red “X” each day you succeed and if you don’t, start again. Good luck!

Do you remember this old song by Johnny Mercer? It hit No. 1 in 1945.

“You’ve got to accentuate the positive,

Eliminate the negative,

And latch on to the affirmative

Don’t mess with Mr. In-between.”
