Legendary journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to speak at Augustana Boe Forum

Carl Bernstein, Legendary Journalist
Monday, November 12, 2018

Legendary journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein will be coming to Sioux Falls this spring, Augustana University announced Thursday.

The dynamic duo — who broke the Watergate story that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon — will be keynote speakers for the 23rd Boe Forum on Public Affairs on March 19, 2019.

The forum will address "Power, the Press and the Presidency," tackling First Amendment issues in the era of news, fake news and the role of journalism in democracy.

The event will also address objective news reporting in America, which has been at the forefront of many academic and political discussions, the event website states.

"Together and separately in their professional lives, Woodward and Bernstein have subjected every administration since the 1970s to rigorous analysis for the benefit of the American people,” Harry Thompson, executive director of the Center for Western Studies at Augustana University, said in a press release.

With tension between presidential and political administrations and the press, the center chose to invite the investigative journalists to talk about how the relationship is a sign of a healthy democracy, the release states.

Augustana University President Stephanie Herseth Sandlin said Woodward and Bernstein have demonstrated "unprecedented civic responsibility through investigative journalism."

"Both reporters have shaped the landscape of journalism — from uncovering Watergate, for which they earned a Pulitzer Prize, to their ongoing reporting of politics, presidential administrations and government," Sandlin said. "Their insight and perspective on journalism and democracy in the world today will no doubt be both highly engaging and thought-provoking."

Most recently, Woodward was recognized for his controversial nonfiction book, "FEAR: Trump in the White House," which sold more than 1.1 million copies in its first week in September, the release states.

The book depicts intimate details of Washington today under the Trump administration.

Woodward is currently the associate editor for The Washington Post, where he has been since 1971.

And since Watergate, Bernstein has continued to build on his reputation for exposing the use and abuse of power, whether it's political, media-related, financial, cultural or spiritual, the release states.

The author of five best-selling books, Bernstein is currently working on several multimedia projects, including a memoir about growing up at a Washington newspaper during the Kennedy era. He also serves as an on-air contributor for CNN and contributing editor for Vanity Fair magazine.

The pair also wrote "All the President's Men" together about their coverage of the Watergate story, and "The Final Days," regarding the Nixon presidency.

The forum will be open to Augustana students and the community on a first-come, first-serve basis, but the date for when tickets will become available has yet to be determined, said Nikki Troxclair, the college's vice president of strategic communications and marketing. Typically, the date is sometime in January or February, she said.
