Dr. Edward Hughes

Leading Expert on National Health Policy

Dr. Edward Hughes, MD, M.P.H., is a physician and tenured professor who pioneered the academic field of medical management. He was founding director of the Institute for Health Services Research and Policy Studies at Northwestern University, which includes five interdisciplinary research programs, and is one of the most highly regarded centers of its kind.

His research has focused on the elaboration of national health policy, the efficient utilization of resources in health care delivery and the future directions of our health system. Hughes is also a co-founder of the Association for Health Services Research where he has served on its board and as its first vice president. He is the editor or serves on the editorial advisory boards for several publications including HMO/PPO Trends, Medical Interface, Health Business Digest, Group Health News and Perspectives on Quality in American Health Care.

Ed Hughes became a faculty member of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1977 as professor of health industry management and as professor of management and strategy. He served as the Director of the Center for Health Services and Policy Research for eighteen years. He is also a professor of Preventive Medicine in Northwestern's medical school. From 1980-83, Dr. Hughes was director of Kellogg's Program in Health Services Management. Previously he was an attending physician and faculty member at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, City University of New York, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Dr. Hughes' teaching and research interests focus on health care policy and management; managed care; health delivery systems; the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries; physician behavior; physician hospital relations; the economics of health care and the quality of health care. As principal or co-principal investigator, he has raised more than $20 million for research at Kellogg, in addition to his activities on behalf of the endowed professorship program at the School. He has been instrumental in building Kellogg's Program in Health Industry Management and in initiating the joint degree program (MDMM) with the Medical School.

Dr. Hughes is the author of two books. He has had more than 40 articles published in leading academic journals. He is an active consulting reviewer for many of the leading journals in his field.

Dr. Hughes received his BA degree in Philosophy at Amherst College in 1962, his MD in 1966 from Harvard Medical School and his M.P.H. in Public Health at Columbia in 1969.

Professionally, Dr. Hughes has served many nonprofit organizations as a consultant or director. He is a charter member of Faulkner and Gray's "Health Care 500", now the "Health Care 1500", a listing of the 1500 most influential members of the health care industry. He is a consultant to numerous organizations and holds membership in several professional associations.
