Dan Nevins

Staff Sergeant, United States Army (Retired) and Recipient of the George C. Lang Award for Courage, the highest award bestowed by Wounded Warrior Project

Dan Nevins began his military career out of high school as an enlisted paratrooper stationed in Germany. Following the completion of his eight-year enlistment – which included four years at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he graduated from the Non Commissioned Officers Academy as a distinguished honor graduate – Nevins remained in the California Army National Guard while earning a bachelor of science in business administration from Sonoma State University in Northern California. Upon graduation, he joined Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, where he excelled as a sales representative.

In February 2004, Staff Sergeant Nevins was deployed to Balad, Iraq as a member of Task Force Tacoma, where he served as an infantry squad leader. Nine months later, on November 10, 2004, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated beneath the vehicle in which he was a passenger on an early morning combat mission. As a result of his injuries, Nevins suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), his left leg was amputated below the knee, and his right leg was severely damaged – requiring more than 30 surgeries to date. Nevins spent 18 months recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC before relocating to Jacksonville, Florida with his wife, Nicole, and daughter, Karyssa after medical retirement in August of 2006. The family welcomed a new baby girl named Carly into their lives in early 2010.

Dan Nevins was appointed community outreach manager for the PGA TOUR on April 2, 2007. In April 2008, Nevins suffered a setback when a recurrent bone infection in his right leg necessitated the amputation of that leg below the knee. Following his surgery, Nevins spent four months in recovery and rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

In May 2008, Nevins was awarded the George C. Lang Award for Courage, the highest award bestowed by Wounded Warrior Project. Although Nevins was a highly decorated soldier, the Courage Award remains his most significant honor. Dan gives credit to Wounded Warrior Project for his successful rehabilitation, positive attitude, “can do” spirit, and more importantly his passion for helping his fellow warriors in any way he can. On March 1, 2009 Nevins joined Wounded Warrior Project in an official capacity, and now serves as director of Warriors Speak, a prestigious group of wounded warriors and caregivers who have been selected to share their personal, inspirational stories of courage and integrity with the public. By sharing his own story and personal accomplishments, Nevins is an inspiration to his peers and the warriors he serves. He recently climbed mount Kilimanjaro with two of his fellow wounded warriors and feels honored to be a part of an organization so significant in the lives of our nation’s military heroes and their families.
